Debuts continue to galore for South Africa in the ongoing Test series against Zimbabwe. The Proteas had as many as three debutants in the first Test — Dewald Brevis, Lhuan-dre Pretorius and Codi Yusuf — and now they have two more in the form of Lesego Senokwane and Prenelan Subrayen.
All three debutants in the first Test shone, with teenager Pretorius shining the brightest, becoming the youngest ever man to post a 150+ score in Test cricket. Will we see Senokwane and Subrayen sizzle in the second Test as well?
A 28-year-old batter, Senokwane plies his trade for Knights in the CSA 4-Day Series Division 1 competition. And the right-handed opener has got a deserved call-up after dominating the FC competition. In the 2024/25 season, with 559 runs at an average of 55.90, Senokwane is the fourth-highest run-getter.
He is one of three batters in the 2024/25 season to smash a double ton, hammering 205 against North West in Bloemfontein. It came in rapid time too, off just 264 balls. Senokwane, however, is a very conventional batter who is far from a dasher.
He recently played for South Africa ‘A’ in the tour of West Indies.
31-year-old Subrayen is a much more experienced, well-known player, and he’s someone who has made strides across formats in domestic cricket.
Subrayen has been toiling hard in domestic cricket for no less than 14 years now, and his well-deserved Test debut comes on the back of a match-winning fifer and 64* for South Africa ‘A’ against West Indies ‘A’. Subrayen is an off-spinner who can bat, and he can bat quite well, evidenced by his FC century to his name.
For years, the 31-year-old has been one of the most consistent performers in the domestic circuit, and in the ongoing season, he’s taken 34 wickets at an average of 23.00.
He’s played three seasons of SA20 for Durban’s Super Giants, for whom he has taken 9 wickets at an economy of 7.30.
