At 17 years and 278 days, Ayush Mhatre has become the youngest player to play for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
The right-hander from Mumbai is making his IPL debut against the Mumbai Indians (MI) in Match 38 of the IPL 2025 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Mhatre was brought into the CSK set-up as a replacement for Ruturaj Gaikwad, who was ruled out of the IPL 2025 because of an elbow fracture.

Mhatre was earlier called for a trial in Chennai, along with a few other domestic cricketers, and the team management picked Mhatre for his aggressive batting and also the fact that he had an impressive domestic season.
He made his domestic debut in the Irani Trophy last October. He became the youngest batter to score 150-plus runs in List A cricket (181 off 117 balls against Nagaland). He also scored a half-century on his Ranji Trophy debut, hitting 52 off 71 balls against Baroda.
The 17-year-old has an impressive record in List A cricket, having smashed 458 runs in seven innings at an average of 65.42 and a strike rate of 135.50.
Mhatre, however, is yet to make his T20 debut for his state, Mumbai. Mhatre did feature in the DY Patil T20 Cup and the Navi Mumbai T20 this year, scoring 172 runs across six innings at an average of 34.4 and a strike rate of 189.
CSK, who are currently at the bottom of the table, have been asked to bat first against MI.
