Rajasthan Royals (RR) captain Sanju Samson had to retire hurt after possibly hurting his ribs in Match 32 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 against Delhi Capitals (DC) on April 16 (Wednesday).
Chasing a target of 189, RR openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and Samson got off to a fantastic start, adding 60 runs in 5.2 overs. It was the third delivery of the sixth over - legspinner Vipraj Nigam bowled a quicker one outside off, and Samson went for a cut, but failed to get any bat to it.
Samson looked uncomfortable and visibly in pain, holding the left side around his rib. The physio came out and checked on him. The wicketkeeper-batter did a bit of stretching and decided to continue batting despite not looking 100 percent fit.
The delivery he missed turned out to be a no ball but Samson failed to capitalise on the free hit, hitting it straight to the fielder at long-off. Samson couldn’t even run a single and that’s when he decided to retire hurt at the personal score of 31 off 19 deliveries.
Samson wasn't retired out, so he can still come out to bat.
Samson became the first RR player in IPL history to retire hurt. Not to forget, the 30-year-old played the first three games of the IPL 2025 as an impact player because of a finger injury.
