Delhi Capitals (DC) captain Meg Lanning has not been in particularly good form in the Women's Premier League (WPL) 2025, and she has not gone past 20 in four of her five innings in the tournament. However, teammate Jess Jonassen has thrown weight behind the skipper, saying that there are plenty of runs to come from her bat this season.
“No, it’s not a concern at all,” Jonassen told reporters after the match.
“She’s a world-class player. The best players in the world miss out a few times. A couple of innings ago, she scored that quickfire 60 [69 off 49 vs UP Warriorz]. She’s one of the hardest-working members of our team. She’s the ultimate competitor, and we have faith that she has more runs left in that bat for us this season.”
Jonassen surprised everyone, including herself, when she walked in at three against Gujarat Giants on February 25 (Tuesday). She slammed her maiden WPL fifty, scoring 61* off 32, helping her side to a comfortable victory.
Speaking of the strategy behind sending her at three, Jonassen said, “I had a conversation with JB [Jonathan Batty], our coach, earlier in the day, that they were planning this to inject some firepower and intent in the powerplay should we lose a wicket early on.
"I’m really pleased I was able to come through with it tonight and repay the faith shown in me.”
With this win, DC went top of the WPL 2025 points table. They will be in action against Mumbai Indians (MI) on February 28 (Friday) in Bengaluru.
