Bangladesh women’s cricket team narrowly missed out on direct qualification for the ICC Women’s World Cup 2025 after they lost in the third and final WODI of the three-match series against West Indies women on January 24 (25 in Bangladesh) by 8 wickets.
As a result of the loss in Basseterre, St Kitts, the Tigresses finished with 21 points from their 24 matches, the same as New Zealand Women. However, due to their superior Net Run Rate (NRR), the White Ferns got the direct qualification.
After their win in the second ODI of the series, the women from Bangladesh had gotten the world glued to the third game, the result of which had the potential to create one of the biggest upsets. But as it turned out, the Women in Red and Green just didn't show up on the day that mattered the most.
With New Zealand’s qualification confirmed, the top six teams to have made it to the Women’s World Cup 2025 are- India (hosts), Australia, England, South Africa, Sri Lanka and New Zealand.
Bangladesh would now have to compete in the ICC Women’s World Cup 2025 Qualifiers.
The qualifier tournament, a six-team series, will be used to determine the next two teams that will make it to the World Cup, which will be hosted by India in 2025. The qualifier tournament will feature Bangladesh as the top-ranked side.
Alongside Bangladesh, three other bottom four members from the ICC Women’s Championship 2022-25–West Indies, Pakistan and Ireland, will be joined by Thailand and Scotland as the top-two ranked teams outside the Championship.
The venue and schedule of the qualifier tournament are yet to be announced.
