History was created in women’s cricket on September 30, 2025. The day would, in the near future, be remembered as the day when the highest number of people attended a group stage fixture in World Cup history.
The opening match of the 2025 Women’s Cricket World Cup between hosts India and Sri Lanka saw a total of 22,843 people throng the Assam Cricket Association Stadium in Barsapara, Guwahati, Assam.
This is the highest attendance for a Women’s World Cup opener and also the highest attendance for a group stage game in an ICC event in women’s cricket.
“The attendance of 22,843 spectators for the opening match of the ICC WCWC 2025 is the highest ever for a group stage fixture at any ICC Women’s event, beating the previous best of 15,935 at the India versus Pakistan fixture at the Dubai International Stadium during the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024,” a press release by the ICC said.
As far as men’s cricket is concerned, the highest number of people attending a World Cup opener was recorded in the 2023 edition. In the match featuring New Zealand and England at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, 47,518 people made it to the venue to witness the defending champions lose every first match of their title defence.
