19 matches into the Women’s ODI World Cup 2025, we have the two semi-finalists, as South Africa join Australia in the knockout stages, on October 18 (Saturday). The Proteas women’s side got to the knockout stage despite not playing on Saturday, after persistent rain in Colombo spoiled the party for New Zealand and Pakistan.
South Africa started the tournament in the worst possible manner, getting dismissed for 69 all-out in their clash against England. But the Proteas women picked up momentum, dismantling one team after the other, with wins over New Zealand, India and Bangladesh.
If that wasn’t enough, Laura Wolvaardt’s team had a dominant ten-wicket win over the other hosts, Sri Lanka, by ten wickets to all but seal their qualification. However, the result here in Colombo has now made South Africa the second semi-finalist.
Australia were the first team to qualify, on the back of their stellar run in the competition, including scripting a historic Women’s ODI run chase against India in Vizag. Alyssa Healy and co made light work of India in that clash, chasing down 331 with an over and three wickets to spare.
Healy’s team have dropped just the one win, and it was because of the persistent rain in Sri Lanka.
