Australia all-rounder Ash Gardner has been named Gujarat Giants' captain for the upcoming edition of the Women's Premier League (WPL), the franchise confirmed on February 5 (Wednesday). Gardner is the franchise's third captain after Beth Mooney and Sneh Rana, who have led in 16 matches between them across the last two seasons.
“It is an absolute honour for me to be named the captain of Gujarat Giants. I have loved being a part of this team, and I am excited to lead this fantastic group in the upcoming season. We have a great mix of young and experienced players and plenty of Indian talent in our squad. I am looking forward to working with the team and making our fans proud,” Gardner said.
Gardner has been among the best performers in the WPL, having scored 324 runs, and her off-spin has fetched her as many as 17 scalps.
However, the Giants have not gone well, finishing bottom of the table in both seasons. Garnder, a two-time Belinda Clark Award winner, will hope to turn things around in the upcoming season.
The Giants will kick their WPL campaign off against defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) on February 14 in Vadodara.
