The Gujarat Giants (GG) ended their Vadodara leg of the Women's Premier League (WPL) 2025 with a five-wicket loss against Mumbai Indians (MI) on February 18 (Tuesday). As a result, the Giants succumbed to their second loss in three matches.
Head coach Michael Klinger feels that the betters could have strategically tried to access the shorter side of the field, which would have fetched them more runs.
As things tuned out, a few batters holed out at deep mid-wicket, which was the longer side. “That was the longest boundary on the ground, and two or three players got caught out there [at deep midwicket]," Klinger said at the post-match press conference.
“It was not so much a mindset thing, probably more of a tactical, strategy thing. They could have tried to access different areas or look to target the shorter side."
However, the Australian felt 120 was never going to be enough but added that they did well to get there, especially after being four-down in the powerplay. “A couple of lengthy partnerships could have been the difference to get us to 140-145," Klinger said.
“The powerplay hasn’t gone according to plan in the last couple of games. Today, losing four wickets, it is tough to come back from that. We do bat pretty deep, so, from the end of the powerplay, we did pretty well to get to 120."
Klinger also lauded the bowlers' efforts for giving them a sniff in the game despite putting up an under-par total.
“Our bowlers did a very good job to give us a little bit of a sniff to win, either about six or seven overs to go. But it is always difficult when you are defending 120,” he said.
The Giants have six days until their next match. They will take on Delhi Capitals (DC) on February 25 (Tuesday) in Bengaluru.
