Mumbai Indians started the match against the UP Warriorz at the Chinnaswamy on a really poor note, as the Warriors scored their second-highest powerplay score (62/1) in Women’s Premier League (WPL) history.
However, they came back splendidly in the game and restricted the UPW to 142/9 in their 20 overs. Meanwhile, in the chase, they dominated except for the first 3.2 overs and then cantered to the target rapidly. In the process, Nat Sciver-Brunt and Hayley Matthews had a 133-run partnership, which was broken just four runs before the Mumbai team reached home. It was the biggest partnership for the second wicket in WPL history.
Sciver-Brunt had already dented the Warriorz with 3/18 in her four overs, dismissing big hitters Kiran Navgire, Chinelle Henry and Shweta Sehrawat. She then terrorised the Warriorz bowling lineup by scoring 75 off just 44 deliveries with 13 fours.
Meanwhile, Hayley Matthews also took a wicket but had a sluggish start to her innings. She opened up after the fall of Yastika Bhatia’s wicket and started charging from the last powerplay over bowled by Saima Thakor. She scored 59 off 50 deliveries and ably supported the English allrounder from the other end.
This was not only the biggest partnership for the second wicket in WPL but also the third-highest partnership overall in the three-year-old league. MI won the game by eight wickets and reached the top of the table.
