Mumbai Indians (MI) registered their first win of the season, beating Gujarat Giants (GG) by five wickets in Match 5 of the Women's Premier League (WPL) 2025 in Vadodara on February 18 (Tuesday).
All-rounder Hayley Matthews, who starred with the ball withc 3/16, says that her team was "pretty hungry" to win this game, especially after MI's last-ball defeat at the hands of Delhi Capitals (DC) in their previous game. As a result, the Giants managed to put up just 120 on the board.
“We knew it was going to be a very important match. The first game definitely did hurt. How close it was, knowing that it was a situation where we could have been one from one,” the 26-year-old said, referring to MI’s two-wicket loss to Delhi Capitals.
“At the same time, we just wanted to stay calm. We know the quality of players that we have within the dressing room and that on our day, we are capable of beating any team.”
With this win, Mumbai have further extended their winning streak over the Giants, which now reads 5-0. “I felt like [the pitch] was definitely conducive to my bowling style and the way I go about it,” the West Indies all-rounder said.
“We’re fortunate to have a pretty good history against them and get another one over. They’ve obviously got a really strong team, who competes really hard. Just pretty happy to get that win but still hard-fought at the end of the day."
One of the most experienced players in the side, Nat Sciver-Brunt, has slammed back-to-back fifties this season, which is a massive boost for the side after her not-so-good showing with the bat last year.
“She is a class player and has been for quite some time,” Matthews said. "She had a difficult season last year with the bat So, it’s really good to see her come out in these two matches and have the start she’s had."
MI's next game will be against the defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) on February 21 (Friday) at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru.
