WPL 2025: UP Warriorz Become First Team To Be Eliminated
UPW, who started the day at the very bottom with just 4 points to their name, needed a DC win to stay alive in the tournament
UP Warriorz (UPW) have become the first team to be officially eliminated from the 2025 edition of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) on the back of Gujarat Giants’ (GG) win over Delhi Capitals (DC) today in Lucknow.
UPW, who started the day at the very bottom with just four points to their name, needed a DC win to stay alive in the tournament. But GG’s win means three teams are now on 8+ points. UPW are out of the race as they can only get to a maximum of 6 points even if they win their final encounter against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) tomorrow.
It’s been a tough season for the Warriorz, who lost their skipper, Alyssa Healy, to injury even before the tournament began. Led by Deepti Sharma in Healy’s absence, UPW managed just two wins in their first seven games (one via a super over) and lost each of their last three matches.
Meanwhile, DC’s loss today means that Mumbai Indians (MI) will progress to the final if they win their remaining two games. MI’s remaining two fixtures are against GG (March 10) and RCB (March 11), both at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai.
Plus, this result means that RCB will have to win each of their remaining two games by a good margin to qualify for the knockouts. Even one loss will signal the end for the defending champions.
