Shafali Verma made sure that her return to mainstream cricket was sensational as she smashed Saika Ishaque for 22 runs in the second over of Delhi Capitals’ chase of 165 against Mumbai Indians in the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2025 on February 15 (Saturday).
After playing a dot on the first ball of the over, she smashed a six to open her account. She drove Ishaque for four and then went down the ground and hit another four. A terrific cut shot gave her a four before a mistimed shot also resulted in a four to end the over.
After a very lean patch in international cricket, Verma was recently dropped from India’s ODI and T20I squads. However, the batter worked hard in domestic cricket and hit two centuries and five fifties in her last 10 innings before the start of the WPL.
Eventually, though, it was a very ordinary ball from Hayley Matthews that got the right-hander out in a very against-the-run-of-play and anti-climatic manner. The 21-year-old scored 43 off just 18 balls before being caught by Amanjot Kaur.
