After Chamari Athapaththu departed from the Women’s Premier League (WPL), the UP Warriorz (UPW) included Australia’s new star batter Georgia Voll in their squad and have now handed her a debut cap in their first-ever home game of the WPL in Lucknow.
Voll, who’s just 21, has already featured in five seasons of the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL), four of whom have come for the Brisbane Heat. A top-order batter who started her career with Queensland, she earned her reputation as a clean ball hitter at the WBBL and banged down the selection doors with a 92 off 55 and a 97 off 56 in the league.
She even scored a 98 for Queensland in the domestic T20 competition. Hence, when a space opened up in Australia's top order after Healy went down with a knee injury in the home ODI series against India, she was chosen as her replacement despite many other senior players in the nation. That was a testament to her ability, and she took to international cricket like a duck to water.
She scored her first international century in the second ODI after a 46 in the first, showcasing her elite game against spin. What stood out was her attacking instincts, as she never let the Indian spinners or pacers settle on a length and showed agile crease movement to create hittable lengths for herself.
Beth Mooney later said in the series that Voll has taken to international cricket like a duck to water. Her opening partner, Phoebe Litchfield, also praised her rise and said that she had to be the best amongst all the domestic options to be selected for Australia, and she showed her class in the series.
Now, she’ll hope to replicate that same performance in India that she did at home a few months ago against the Indian bowlers back in Queensland.
