For the first time in IPL history, Royal Challengers Bengaluru completed a double - away and home win against Chennai Super Kings, on May 3 (Saturday), with a two-run win. Earlier this year, the 2016 IPL finalists completed a convincing 50-run win, their first in the IPL since the inaugural season.
But it was anything but convincing this match, as RCB batting first, were in a great spot of bother at 157/5 when Rajat Patidar got out for a 15-ball 11. From thereon, however, everything changed when Romario Shepherd walked out to bat and smashed a 14-ball 53, with ten boundaries, including six sixes.
It was the reason why RCB got over the 200-run mark. At that point, RCB were an advantage, given that CSK hadn’t chased a score above 180. However, CSK got off to a flying start, as Ayush Mhatre slammed boundaries for fun, scoring 58 runs in the powerplay.
Even Mhatre (48-ball 94) wasn’t enough for the five-time IPL winners, as they needed a miracle from the lower order - Dewald Brevis and MS Dhoni - to take them out of trouble. However, Brevis fell for a first-ball duck, on the back of a terrible decision, as they went from 172/3 to 172/4 in just two deliveries.

In the end, even Shivam Dube’s three-ball eight wasn’t enough on the night as RCB completed a rare double. It was also CSK’s ninth defeat in the season, their second-worst season behind 2022, when they lost ten games.
