Yashasvi Jaiswal, on July 23 (Wednesday), became the first Indian opener in over 50 years to register a 50-plus Test score at Old Trafford. The left-handed batter achieved the feat on Day 1 of the fourth Test against England.
Old Trafford in Manchester has historically not been a happy hunting ground for Indian openers. The last time an Indian opener crossed the 50-run mark at the venue was back in June 1974, when Sunil Gavaskar scored 101 and 58 in the same Test.
Apart from Gavaskar and Jaiswal, only Nari Contractor, Vijay Merchant, and Mushtaq Ali have managed to score 50 or more as Indian openers at Old Trafford.
In the process, Jaiswal also went past 1000 Test runs against England in just his ninth match. Among 134 batters who have scored at least 1000 Test runs against England, Jaiswal’s average of 66.87 is the third best - behind only Sir Donald Bradman (89.79) and George Headley (71.23).
Jaiswal scored 58 runs before falling to left-arm spinner Liam Dawson, who is playing a Test match for England after 2928 days (8 years and 6 days).
Dawson's last Test wicket came way back on July 16, 2017, when he dismissed South Africa’s Hashim Amla. On his return, it took Dawson just seven deliveries to claim a wicket.
