Yashasvi Jaiswal made a terrific start to his international career, scoring a 171 on his Test debut against West Indies recently. This comes as no surprise to many, given how consistent he has been at the domestic level and also in the Indian Premier League (IPL). In fact, he finished IPL 2023 as the fifth-highest run-getter with 625 runs at a strike-rate of 163.61, opening the innings for Rajasthan Royals (RR), which further pushed his case for a national selection.
Speaking of the 21-year-old, former England captain Nasser Hussain believes that the Indian batter has what it takes to succeed at the highest level.
"From what I've seen... he's made a fantastic start," said Hussain on the recent episode of The ICC Review.
"You speak to people who have seen him in the IPL, again I've been working with Ricky (Ponting), and Dinesh (Karthik) came over, and you ask questions, and they all go, yeah, this lad can play.
"He looks to have the technique, and he looks to have that mindset. Like most young Indian players and batters in particular, most of them come in and have immediate success. And that is a good sign for first-class cricket that they are being produced, not just the IPL.
"I've watched so many young Indian batters come in, and I look at them and think, technically, they look very gifted because they've been brought up on watching Rohit or watching Virat or watching before that, you know, Virat's watched Sachin [Tendulkar] and Sachin's watched Sunil [Gavaskar]," Hussain added.
Jaiswal's T20 International (T20I) was not a memorable one, as he got out for just one in Guyana. He has a chance to make amends in the final two games of the series as India look to win the series.
