New Zealand defeated the Netherlands by 99 runs in the 6th Match of the ongoing ICC Cricket World Cup at Hyderabad. This was the second consecutive defeat for the Dutch after Pakistan defeated them in a similar fashion by 81 runs at the same venue.
Even then, the Netherlands batted second after winning the toss. This strategy was questioned by the commentators quite a bit today, with the surface becoming gradually worse to bat on as the day progressed.
New Zealand scored 322, with 60 runs coming in the last 5 overs. Scott Edwards, captain of the Netherlands team, acknowledged it. “They got away from us in the last 3 overs, which pushed the score slightly further than we were hoping. If we could hold them to 280-300 mark, the wicket gets a little better at night.”, Edwards said.
While batting, the Dutch failed to build big partnerships, with 49 being the highest. Except for Ackermann’s 69, none of their batters reached fifty as the Men In Orange fell short of the target by 99 runs. Scott Edwards wasn’t happy about this.
“NZ are a disciplined bowling attack, they are not going to make it easy for you. You are not going to chase down 321 with 40s, 50s and 60s. We will speak about that with the boys.”, the Dutch captain said in the post-match presentation.
The Netherlands have an uphill task waiting for them in the upcoming game as they face South Africa at Dharamshala on the 17th of October.
Their skipper understands what needs to be done, as he said, “Come the next few games, we have to put on bigger partnerships and bigger scores. For us, it's another game; we have to play our best cricket and try to win.”
