Young Guns Brevis, Lhuan-dre Pretorius Named In South Africa’s Test Squad For Zimbabwe Tour

They have been fast-forwarded into the Test team not on the basis of their T20 batting, but on solid First-Class numbers.

Cricket South Africa (CSA) on June 6 (Friday) announced their 15-man squad for the tour of Zimbabwe, where the two teams will engage in a two-match Test series, which will not be for the World Test Championship (WTC) points.

The squad includes young guns Dewald Brevis and Lhuan-dre Pretorius, who have made a name for themselves playing in franchise cricket, be it the Indian Premier League (IPL) or home-based SA20.

However, this does not mean that they have been fast-forwarded into the Test team on the basis of their T20 numbers.

While 22-year-old Brevis has featured in 20 First-Class games so far, averaging 41.1 with four centuries to his name, Pretorius, 19, has played six red-ball games for his domestic side, Titans and averages an outstanding 65 with three centuries and a half-century. Brevis can also bowl leg-spin and has 10 wickets to his name as well.

Other than Brevis and Pretorius, batter Lesego Senokwane, pacer Codi Yusuf, and off-spinner Prenelan Subrayen are the other three uncapped players in the Proteas squad.

Zubayr Hamza has also received a call-back to the national side, having played the last of his eight Tests in February 2024. Hamza has done rather poorly at the international level, averaging 19.18 with one fifty, for someone who has an average of 47 across 100 First-Class games with 18 centuries and 35 fifties to his name at that level.

Kwena Maphaka and Matthew Breetzke, having previously played Test cricket for the Proteas, are also part of the squad.

All these players will cover up for the names that are part of the World Test Championship (WTC) Final South Africa squad, but will not travel to Zimbabwe. Marco Jansen, Aiden Markram, Kagiso Rabada, Ryan Rickelton, Tristan Stubbs, Dane Paterson and Senuran Muthusamy are part of the WTC Final squad, but will not travel to Zimbabwe.

The first of the two matches between Zimbabwe and South Africa at the Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo, will be played from June 28 onwards.
