Zak Crawley named England captain for Ireland ODIs

The squad consists of three uncapped players - Warwickshire batter Sam Hain, Surrey wicketkeeper-batter Jamie Smith and Derbyshire pacer George Scrimshaw

Zak Crawley has been named England captain for the One-Day International (ODI) series against Ireland ahead of the World Cup in India in October-November. Ben Duckett will don the role of the vice-captain of the side. Crawley has played just three ODIs for England, all of which came in July 2021 - a format in which he has scored 97 runs in three innings at an average of 48.50.

He had a stellar Ashes recently, where he was England's leading run-getter with 480 runs at 53.33. Overall, he has played 39 Tests for his country, in which he has hit 2,204 runs at 31.48.

The squad also includes three uncapped players - Warwickshire batter Sam Hain, Surrey wicketkeeper-batter Jamie Smith and Derbyshire pacer George Scrimshaw. Batter Harry Brook, who was recently added to the ODI squad to take on New Zealand starting Friday (September 8) in Cardiff, is also part of the Crawley-led squad.

The 24-year-old will have another crack against Ireland to remain in contention for a place in the World Cup.

The three-match series against Ireland will kick start on September 20 at Headingley, Leeds. The second and third games will be played at Trent Bridge (September 23) and Seat Unique Stadium, Bristol (September 26).

The World Cup squad, led by Jos Buttler, will then travel to India, where they will play a couple of warm-up games - against India on September 30 and Bangladesh on October 2 - both in Guwahati before they get their title defence underway against New Zealand on October 5 at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad.

England squad for Ireland ODIs: Zak Crawley (c), Rehan Ahmed, Harry Brook, Brydon Carse, Ben Duckett (vc), Sam Hain, Will Jacks, Craig Overton, Matthew Potts, Phil Salt, George Scrimshaw, Jamie Smith, Luke Wood.
