Just days after India failed to touch the 300-run mark and thereby become the first ICC full-member team to do so in the T20 format, Zimbabwe too fell short, but in the process managed to post the second-highest total by a Test-playing side in the format.
Batting against Seychelles in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup Sub Regional Africa Qualifier Group B on October 19 (Saturday), the Zimbabwean team went bonkers with the bat in hand, smashing 286/5 in their 20 overs at the Nairobi Gymkhana Club Ground in Nairobi.
This is now the second-highest score by a Test-playing nation, only behind India’s 297/6, scored against Bangladesh on October 12.
Brian Bennett top-scored with 91 off just 35 balls, while Tadiwanashe Marumani, his opening partner, also made merry with a 37-ball 86. The duo put up 145 in only 9.4 overs for the first wicket.
Due to a rain interruption, the Seychelles team's target was reduced to 95 in 6.1 overs. However, the island nation's batters could only reach 18/2 in their quota of overs, losing the game by 76 runs.
The record for the highest T20I total still remains with Nepal who helped themselves to 314/3 against Mongolia during the Asian Games in 2023, held in China. Among the Test-playing nations, Afghanistan sit third on the list of teams with the highest T20I totals. They amassed 278/3 against Ireland in Dehradun in 2019.
