Born in Mumbai, Shivam Dube is a kind of cricketer who adds three-dimensional value to the teams he represents. At the early age of 14, Shivam struggled with his fitness and lack of financial support. He though didn't give up and worked hard to get selected for Mumbai Under-23.
 
In the 2015-16 season of the Syed Mushtaq Ali tournament, Shivam made his T20 debut and soon after, he played his first List A game. He had a dream Ranji debut in 2017-18 where he picked up a five-wicket haul. A couple of good seasons with Mumbai gave Dube the exposure and he grabbed eyeballs after hitting five sixes in an over against Baroda in the 2018 Ranji Trophy. With 23 wickets, Shivam had a very successful season and soon received a contract from Bangalore to represent them in the 2019 edition of the Indian T20 League.
 
The year 2019 proved to be very fruitful for Dube has he made his debut for the national team. His first appearance in T20Is was against Bangladesh and then he got his ODI cap against West Indies. In 2020, during India's tour of New Zealand, Shivam got an unwanted record to his name as he conceded 34 runs in an over - the second-most expensive over in a T20I match.

A great spell with dot balls is often not rewarded, despite the spell making a huge difference in the outcome of a game. Bowling at the Powerplay and the death, often bowlers concede very different runs. 5 an over in the Powerplay and 8 an over at the death, could perfectly be okay. KXIP bypassed all those 9 possibilities and settled in on the 10th.&nbsp;For two bowlers whose first 2 overs each were all negative impacts, to come back with so much elan and pomp, underscored the importance of quality bowlers who could create unforced errors from batsmen. One wonders, if Mayank Agarwal had got a bit more wood on the ball off Prasidh, would it have sailed over Shubman Gill? Would the script have been very different? Mayank&rsquo;s wicket gave some hope, but Nicholas Pooran and KL Rahul still wrested momentum back.&nbsp;KXIP&rsquo;s decision of sending Prabhsimran Singh to get some match time, backfired in the worst possible manner, giving lesser time for Glenn Maxwell to finish the game off. &ldquo;There was a message from outside about left hand-right hand. We had a discussion about and we wanted to go ahead with it because they had two leggies. That could have kept them out of the game.&rdquo;&nbsp;This was Virat Kohli&rsquo;s candid reasoning behind AB de Villiers coming out to bat at number six against KXIP in their last game. Let us try and understand what prompted the decision.&nbsp;Despite KXIP&#39;s abject failure to execute their plans this season, they have been better prepared in both their games against RCB and that shows in the results.In their first encounter in Match 9th this season, KXIP bamboozled RCB after posting a 200+ total and then unleashed their legspinners &ndash; Ravi Bishnoi and Murugan Ashwin &ndash; against them. The two leggies had an aggregate return of six for 53 in seven overs. Ashwin got the prized wicket of de Villiers.&nbsp;Despite two good outings, first against RCB and then against RR on the Rahul Tewatia night, Ashwin missed four games to follow. KXIP brought him back against their reverse fixture against RCB.The ghosts of the past played on RCB&rsquo;s mind that prompted them to promote Washington Sundar to number four after the second wicket fell in the seventh over after Ashwin cleaned-up Aaron Finch.Reading the game well themselves, KXIP bowled Glenn Maxwell from one-end to counter the left-hander. When Ashwin got his second wicket, getting Sundar in the eleventh over of the innings, Maxwell had bowled three overs for a miserly 22.What&rsquo;s more, RCB&rsquo;s logic of ensuring the legspinners finish their quota before de Villiers walked failed as the use of Maxwell ensured Bishnoi had three overs up his sleeves.In an ideal world, after an experiment fails, teams should switch back to the tested formula. Yet, RCB aggravated it by sending in Shivam Dube at five. While they stuck to their plan of using left-handers against legspin, they failed to acknowledge KXIP&rsquo;s reactiveness of being one step ahead and using Maxwell instead.<img src="https://s3.ap-south-1.amazonaws.com/image.cricket.com/temp%2F3eec480421d810407935bfa996e4c6ac1d4c4103.jpg" style="width: 900px;" class="fr-fic fr-dib" data-code="200">Kohli&rsquo;s <a href="https://www.cricket.com/news/time-running-out-for-rr-as-they-clash-with-a-hardened-rcb-1602859118609" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">approach</a> in the middle-overs did not help their cause either. On a night when they planned their batting line-up as per match-ups, Kohli characteristic sedate approach did not help to release the pressure off their youngsters. Failing to counter KXIP&rsquo;s plan, Kohli did not attack Maxwell on the short boundaries at Sharjah and just rotated strike against him, scoring six off six balls.In the end, when de Villiers walked in at the end of 15 overs, RCB were behind the game with him left with no option than to attack from the word go. Moreover, both Ashwin and Bishnoi still had an over each up their sleeve while Maxwell quietly chipped in with 28 runs in his four overs.Facing his fifth ball as late as the 18th over, de Villiers toe-ended Mohammed Shami to extra-cover. Two balls later, Shami bounced out Kohli.&nbsp;If not for the heroics of Chris Morris and Isuru Udana in the last two overs, RCB would have been out of the game in the first innings itself. Despite KXIP being the side that are so uncertain they are unable to finish games when the opposition themselves have given up.Before their game against KXIP, RCB&rsquo;s top-3 and de Villiers did all the lifting. Dube and Sundar averaged 8 and 6.9 balls per match with the bat. Gurkeerat Singh did not get a chance to bat in three matches and has made way for an extra bowler, Mohammed Siraj, in the last two games.If the logic was to give the youngsters a chance before the business end of the tournament, their promotion is still acceptable. Going by Kohli&rsquo;s logic of the message from outside, the project should have been called off after the pilot (read Sundar&rsquo;s promotion) failed.There will always be questions from the purists as teams make decisions based on data. On the use of data-centric decision making in cricket, former India captain Rahul Dravid said &ldquo;The critical thing for me are the people who are going to make the best use of these numbers. How you read those numbers, what you get out of these numbers is the key&rdquo;.&nbsp;The thing about data is that it changes after every ball and the other teams are using it as well. The teams should be flexible to alter their plans based on ground reality to maximize its utility. As Dravid said, what you get out of these numbers is the key. &nbsp;

It was the same old story for Bangalore, albeit the win. For the 35 overs of the customary 40, they were comfortably ahead in the game. However, their Achilles Heel - death bowling - was yet to be tested and Mumbai, having waited for their chance for so long, finally cashed in.&nbsp;At the start of the 16th over in the run-chase, they required 90 to win. A day ago, Punjab conceded 86 off the final five overs to lose the game in Sharjah. In this game, believe it or not, Bangalore were taken apart for 89 runs in the last five overs in a big ground like Dubai to tie the game. This happened, despite Bangalore having strengthened their bowling by handing maiden caps to Adam Zampa and Isuru Udana.&nbsp;The opening to pull this off was provided by a tactical blunder from Bangalore. Given the extent at which data is used nowadays, it must be a common knowledge not to bowl leg-spin to Kieron Pollard at the death. Before this game, he had struck leg-spinners at a strike-rate of 193.1 in his T20 career.&nbsp;Bangalore fed the Trinidadian with back to back overs of leg-spin of Adam Zampa and Yuzvendra Chahal (17th and 18th over in the innings). Facing 10 of those 12 deliveries, Pollard struck 42 runs to bring Mumbai roaring back into the game. After setting up the chase early on, Ishan Kishan took the back seat but contributed with 7 runs off the two deliveries he faced during this little phase where the game was turned around its head. There were 49 runs in those two overs.&nbsp;With 31 required off the last two overs, it was on the pacers to limit the damage to an affordable territory. Kishan took the baton back from Pollard clubbing three sixes, the third of which took him within a distance of 1 run from his maiden IPL ton. However, he perished for 99 in an attempt to finish the match off the penultimate ball with 5 required to win. Pollard finished the duties depositing Udana&#39;s innocuous bouncer for four finishing the game in a tie. In between, there were also drop catches at the boundary line spilled over for six.It is not that Bangalore did everything wrong. It is not easy to contain Mumbai batsmen and the Bangalore bowlers kept the pressure on the opposition for 15 overs with the ball.&nbsp;<img src="https://s3.ap-south-1.amazonaws.com/image.cricket.com/temp%2Faf4a51560812c1cfc10089412144f051ce806364.png" style="width: 600px;" class="fr-fic fr-dib" data-code="200">After 14 runs in the first over consisting of a typical Rohit Sharma pull for six, Virat Kohli&#39;s men derailed MI&#39;s run chase early with a couple of wickets. One of them was the prized wicket of Rohit himself which came off Bangalore&#39;s punt to put Washington Sundar in front of the maverick opener.&nbsp;Sundar bowled an immaculate second over with three dot balls pitched in the good length area. For the fourth ball, he pitched it a little short challenging Rohit to clear the fence. The plan worked wonders on the big boundaries as Rohit found the substitute fielder, Pawan Negi at the deep square-leg.&nbsp;Next over, Isuru Udana made amends for a poor first over by correcting his angle. Coming from over the wicket in his next over (3rd over of the innings), Udana sent Suryakumar Yadav for a duck who was batting with an uncharacteristic opened-up stance.Sundar completed his quota by the 10th over finishing with figures of 12 runs in his four overs. His tight line and length also kept Quinton de Kock quiet. The left-hander who struggles to get going against spin early in his innings faced eight balls from Sundar managing only 4 runs in the Powerplay. Trying to force himself out of the quicksand, de Kock perished to Chahal in the first over post the Powerplay. &nbsp;&nbsp;It was the same story for Hardik Pandya. He did hit one six off Zampa but failed to repeat in his second attempt to clear the fence few overs later.Kishan, playing his first game of the season with the pressure to cement his spot in the team, was the only to keep Mumbai&#39;s hopes alive during the middle-overs phase. Mumbai scored 77 runs in these nine overs (overs 7 to 15) and the young left-hander contributed 46 of these runs. He carted Navdeep Saini for for two maximums in the 11th over to set the ball rolling for himself and completed his fifty with a swing over the mid-wicket fence for another six three overs later. He adorned his knock with nine sixes which would have cleared any ground in the world.&nbsp;Moreover, his knock gave Pollard the breathing space to get his eye in. The all-rounder was 11 off his first 10 deliveries setting him up for the carnage later on.Earlier in the day, Bangalore were fantastic with the bat. In a combined batting effort, they found a hero in every phase. Devdutt Padikkal kicked-start the innings with a couple of boundaries but it was Finch who played the aggressor&#39;s role. Getting his motor running with a sweetly timed six off Trent Boult in the third over of the innings, Finch breezed to 40 off 25 balls at the end of the Powerplay.&nbsp;Bangalore&#39;s batting went through a dip in the middle overs where they accumulated only 37 runs in seven overs between over number seven and 13. The lowering run-rate was sponsored by Finch&#39;s dismissal (for a 35-ball 52) and tentative knock from the skipper Virat Kohli who batted like a shadow of himself. He trudged to 3 runs off 11 balls before lending catching practice to Rohit Sharma at cover off a flighted delivery by Rahul Chahar. A second-wicket stand of 11 runs off 20 balls allowed Mumbai to be back in the game.&nbsp;But it was Padikkal&#39;s turn to shine. Having struggled to accelerate for a major part of the innings, Padikkal found his touch by smoking back-to-back sixes off James Pattinson. The shackles were broken and the southpaw completed another impressive half-century off 37 balls.&nbsp;Cometh the death overs, it was AB de Villiers&#39; turn once again. Heading into the death overs scoring 12 off eight deliveries, de Villiers obliterated Mumbai&#39;s bowling. Opposition&#39;s best bowler, Jasprit Bumrah was his main target. He deposited the Bumrah for three massive sixes in the 27 runs he scored off him from eight balls. His 55 not out from 24 balls kept Bangalore in contention for a big total. Shivam Dube finally came to the party for Bangalore vindicating his six-hitting ability. His three sixes against Pattinson in the final over elevated Bangalore to 201 for three.&nbsp;Overall, a bad day for Bumrah, his second in three games so far, cost Mumbai the game. Surprisingly, he did not opt for a yorker during the regular course of play conceding 42 in his four overs without denting the opposition. When he finally bowled one, in the Super Over, it was pretty late since the target for Bangalore was only eight. Saini had bowled a brilliant Super Over allowing Mumbai batsmen only 7 runs. Although, one can always question Bumrah&#39;s decision to bowl a bouncer with the fine-leg inside the circle allowing de Villiers to guide the ball for four through a top edge. Kohli whipped a low full toss from Bumrah for four to finally end the game in Bangalore&#39;s favor.&nbsp;Kishan will rue the opportunity to earn two points for his team. He struck spinners and pacers with equal disdain and batted through almost the entirety of the innings to keep his side in the contest. In the end, the heat and humidity of Dubai played its part and Kishan was not able to bat in the Super Over. De Villiers, who kept the wickets for Bangalore today apart from playing a whirlwind knock was so dehydrated that he could not walk out to collect his man-of-the-match award.&nbsp;Despite a 97-run defeat against Punjab, Bangalore are off to a good start to the league by registering four points in three games and beating Mumbai only for the second time since 2016. However, they must also be aware that they got out of jail in both the games they have won so far.

Talking about Royal Challengers Bangalore&rsquo;s (RCB) loss against Kings XI Punjab (KXIP), former India player Gautam Gambhir said that Shivam Dube bowling the last over for RCB was a &lsquo;bad calculation&rsquo;.&nbsp;&ldquo;You finished off Navdeep Saini in the 17th over. Probably, you could have used Umesh Yadav, who did not have the best of the days. But Shivam Dube bowling the last over was a bad calculation,&rdquo; Gambhir told ESPNCricinfo.RCB faced a 97-run defeat at the hands of KXIP, who restricted their rivals at 109 runs in 17 overs on Thursday night.&nbsp;However, it was not a good day for skipper Virat Kohli as he missed two catches on the field and scored only one run off the bat.Bangalore bowlers conceded 60 runs in the final three overs of the match as Punjab&rsquo;s skipper KL Rahul created the record of highest score by a skipper in the history of Indian Premier League.&nbsp;&ldquo;I know Shivam Dube bowled really well in his first two overs. Yes, you would be tempted to give him a third over, but not the last over. When KL Rahul is already set and batting on 100+, you are walking on the edge, because that can happen,&rdquo; Gambhir said.He further added, &ldquo;I would have Navdeep Saini or Dale Steyn bowling the last over, even though Steyn is not the best death over. But I would have given the last over to the best bowler of the team&rdquo;.&nbsp;&ldquo;Had KL Rahul got out for 86-89, Kings XI would have scored 185, and chasing that would have been completely different gameplan for RCB. India bowling coach Bharat Arun strongly feels that Shivam Dube has all the ingredients to become a good all-rounder at the international level as he keeps gaining confidence with every international game that he plays. Dube came into the limelight with his big-hitting prowess during an innings of 54 in 30 balls during the second T20 International against West Indies in Thiruvananthapuram.He hit four sixes in that innings apart from a good show with the ball in an earlier series against Bangladesh. &quot;He (Dube) is an exciting prospect and I think he is gaining in confidence from every game. Even you if look at the way he came back the way after he bowled the first over (in Mumbai) against West Indies, I think that was creditable. For Virat (Kohi), to show faith in him after the first over and also for him to bowl a good spell after that...&quot;And I think he is an exciting talent for us. As he gains in confidence, he will become a good all-rounder,&quot; Arun told reporters ahead of the first ODI against West Indies here on Sunday. He was all praise for seamer Deepak Chahar, who has done well in the recent T20 games, the Indian bowling coach said he has got everything in him to do well consistently at the international level.&quot;Deepak has been exceptional even in the IPL. He is someone who can move the ball both ways. He is also a very skillful bowler, bowling slow bouncers, yorkers, I think with so much skill on hand... let me put it this way, he has got everything in him to do well at the international level,&quot; he added.Wrist spinners Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal hasn&#39;t featured together in recent games unlike the last two years in the lead up to the World Cup. &quot;See, we were looking at an ideal combination which lends absolute balance to the team. Also there was an option to use Ravindra Jadeja as an all-rounder. That really helped us. There may be occasions when there may be conducive conditions where both can be used. We have to look at overall balance of the team,&quot; he added.Looking ahead to the first ODI against the West Indies boasting of aggressive batsmen, asked if the India bowlers can tame the rival batsmen, he said their batsmen come after you there is always a chance. &quot;Definitely, I think yes. The last two out of three games we have won, the bowling also has done pretty well. I am sure we have the bowling to restrict them, but saying that West Indies are an extremely competitive side. But when their batsmen come after you, you also have a chance against them,&quot; he added.Arun said that the team was not overtly worried about the dew factor. About the fitness status of paceman Bhuvneshwar Kumar, he said the physios are taking a call and they would be giving a press release later in the evening after the assessment. About the Indians having a number of quality fast bowlers presently, Arun said it augurs well but it would be horses for courses policy. &quot;...The more number of bowlers do well, I think it augurs well for us. So it gives you a varied pool of bowlers to choose from. Also we would be seeing the conditions, New Zealand would be different, Australia would be different. So it will be horses for courses..,&quot; he added.On not playing right-arm off-spinners more in the ODIs, he said: &quot;As it is, if you look at Jadeja, you have a ready-made all-rounder for us. Jadeja, after the World Cup, he has been exceptional for us. He bowls well, bats well and is the best fielder in the world. He adds a lot of dimension for us. The question was in reference to local lad Washington Sundar, who is not a part of the ODI side.&quot;I am sure Washington in due course will stake his claim for the ODI team. Every time he is given an opportunity he has done well with the ball. I can that tell you he is more than a capable bat. Every time he has got an opportunity he has played a cameo. I am sure in the future he would be somebody who you would be considering for the one-day scenario as well,&quot; he added.

Thiruvananthapuram: Shivam Dube is confident that he can &quot;clear any ground&quot; in the world after providing a demo of his six-hitting prowess against the West Indies in the second T20 International, albeit in a losing cause.Promoted up the order at No 3, Dube smashed 54 off 30 balls with four sixes, three of which came in one over from rival skipper Kieron Pollard but India failed to defend a target of 170 with three-match series levelled at 1-1.&quot;I think this ground is big but I have the capability of clearing any ground. You might have seen today also and that&#39;s the capability I have,&quot; the big-bodied Dube said at the post-match press conference.Initially, Dube was unable to clear the ropes as he relied more on power than timing which didn&#39;t work for him. However the Mumbai player believes that power will always remain his USP.&quot;I think that&#39;s my strength and I always go like that only,&quot; he added.When he was struggling with his timing, it was vice-captain Rohit Sharma, who urged the youngster to stay calm and back his strength, which was exactly the advice that he needed at that juncture.&quot;I think I was given the opportunity to bat at No.3 and I think it was a big deal for me. The pressure was there at the starting obviously - international match.&quot;After that, Rohit bhai helped me and he said &#39;stay calm and back your strength&#39;. I think that was the motivation I needed from a senior player. They hadn&rsquo;t defeated India in seven successive T20Is. They had the lowest win/loss ratio (0.46), among all teams who have played 25+ T20Is since the 2016 World T20. They had won just one T20I out of 10 in 2019. The odds were stacked against them. But on Sunday at the Greenfield International Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram, West Indies showed us why you can never count out the world champions as they beat India by eight wickets!Lendl Simmons was the star for the West Indies as he scored an unbeaten 67 from 45 deliveries. It was a d&eacute;j&agrave; vu moment for India who will not have forgotten the Caribbean opener&rsquo;s heroics during the semi-final contest between the two sides in the 2016 World T20.In fact, there&rsquo;s something about India that brings out the best in Simmons. In no other country does he average more than he does in India (52.66) in T20Is. If you consider a minimum of three innings, then he averages more against India (41.66) than any other team in the format too.Simmons was well supported by the left-handed trio of Evin Lewis, Shimron Hetmyer and Nicholas Pooran. A target of 171 wasn&rsquo;t going to be easy on a pitch that was a touch slow and considering the fact that, since 2017, West Indies had successfully chased down a 160+ target just once in nine attempts in T20Is. But Lewis &ndash; another batsman who loves batting against India &ndash; and Simmons&rsquo; 73-run opening partnership set a near-perfect platform for the visitors.When Lewis was dismissed on 30 by Washington Sundar, Hetmyer walked in to keep the left-right combination going. In fact, he has an economy rate of 6.6 between overs 1-6 in his T20 career which is excellent for a spinner.The other spinner in the West Indian line-up, Hayden Walsh Jr., also was in fine form. He took two wickets and conceded just 28 runs from his four overs. It was Walsh Jr. who took the important scalp of Dube and, if not for that, the away team might have had to chase a much higher target.The West Indian pacers also made crucial contributions, with Kesrick Williams and Sheldon Cottrell taking two and one wicket(s) respectively. But what was most impressive from the duo was their bowling at the death. In the last four overs, India managed to score just 26, out of which three were bowled by Williams and Cottrell.For the hosts, Rishbah Pant played a good knock, scoring 33 not out from 22 balls, but the wicketkeeper-batsman didn&rsquo;t get enough support from the other end during the death overs. A target of 171 was expected to be a tricky one for the West Indies, but in the end, the world champions eased to victory.A main area of concern for India will be the difference in their recent records while batting first and batting second. Since 2018, when doing the latter, they have a win percentage of 82.3, but when they bat first, it&rsquo;s just 50. With less than one year to go for the next World T20, it&rsquo;s something they will want to improve on.On the other hand, for the West Indies, this victory will come as a huge relief considering their poor run of results in the 20-over format recently. Young all-rounder Shivam Dube says he is not aiming to replace Hardik Pandya in India&#39;s T20 squad but is certainly looking to make the most of the opportunities that are coming his way.Pandya has been out of the team for more than a month because of a back injury that needed a surgery in England. He is currently undergoing rehabilitation and that has paved the way for Shivam to make the team and he is now gearing up for the upcoming limited-overs series against the West Indies.It starts with the first T20 International on Friday (6th December 2019).The lanky all-rounder from Mumbai has so far played three T20 Internationals, all against Bangladesh, registering best figures of 3 for 30.Asked whether he is looking to oust Hardik from the team, Shivam said: &quot;I don&#39;t think it&#39;s an opportunity to replace Hardik but I think I have got a chance and I will try to do well for my country. I have got a job for my country and I will try to do that better.&quot;Primarily a bowling all-rounder, who can hit big shots, Shivam will be aiming to assert himself more in the three T20 Internationals against the West Indies.In the three matches he has played so far, Shivam hasn&#39;t done anything remarkable, except for that three-wicket burst against Bangladesh, but the lanky all-rounder said he enjoys the support of skipper Virat Kohli and the team management.&quot;Everyone is supporting me. The support from captain and the team management was really good for me. They gave me a lot of confidence. So, I feel really happy and relaxed in the dressing room,&quot; he said.Insisting that fitness is key to success for an all-rounder, Shivam said he is confident about his bowling skills.&quot;It&#39;s always difficult being an all-rounder. Most important for me is to maintain my fitness levels because as an all-rounder, you need to both bat and bowl. So, maintaining fitness is really a difficult job,&quot; he said.&quot;I am very confident of my bowling. In T20 games, every bowler gets a bad as well as a good game. So, I try to prepare myself in very good situations and I feel that I can be a proper bowler who can bowl four overs. I have done that job,&quot; he added.Shivam rated the West Indies as a good T20 side but said he is confident of India pocketing the series easily.&quot;They (West Indies) have got a good T20 side but we have prepared very nicely. I think India is the best team in world cricket and we will win the series,&quot; he said.
