5 factors that shaped RCB's rampant win over GT

Will Jacks raced from his fifty to the 100-run mark in only 10 balls

RCB choke GT in powerplay

At a run rate of 7.9, Gujarat Titans are the slowest movers in the powerplay. That might have played a part today (April 28). GT managed only 42 runs in the first six overs. In comparison, RCB scored 21 runs more. At the toss, Faf du Plessis said that the pitch would get easier to bat on later, and that was exactly how the match unfolded.

Shahrukh provides impetus

After a slow start, Gujarat promoted Shahrukh Khan to number four. Batting at this position only for the second time in his IPL career, the 28-year-old provided the much-needed impetus. GT were 45/2 in 6.4 overs at his arrival. Shahrukh’s 30-ball 58 (his first IPL fifty) carried the team to 131/3 in 14.1 overs before his departure.

Finish from Sudharsan and Miller

After adding 86 off 45 balls with Shahrukh, Sai Sudharsan paired with David Miller to add another 69 runs from 36 balls. Sudharsan accelerated and finished with 84 not out from 49 balls. David Miller scored 26 not out from 19 balls. Miller’s last ball six elevated GT’s total to 200/3. They scored 118 runs in the last 10 overs.

Kohli vs spin

Virat Kohli has borne the brunt of his strike rate against spin this season. Against Sunrisers Hyderabad, Kohli managed only 18 off 20 balls he played against spin. Against Gujarat, however, the Delhi-born scored 61 off 34 balls against spinners.

Gujarat are known to be one of the best spin-bowling units in the competition. But Kohli has always shone against GT spinners. In IPL since 2022, Kohli averages 136 against spin at a strike rate of 143.2 against GT spinners, both his highest against any spin unit.

Jacks on a rampageWill Jacks was 17 off 17 balls at one point in the innings when Kohli was moving the RCB innings along. He then whacked Mohit Sharma for 29 runs and didn’t look back. From 17 off 17, Jacks completed his fifty in 31 balls. That wasn’t it; he took just 10 balls to complete his hundred from fifty, showing his weight.

Kohli and Jacks added 166 runs off only 74 balls for the second wicket.
