Cricket is a funny game, ain't it? Some days, even 200 cannot be defended. And on others, 118 gets defended. Guyana have jumped to the top with this amazing win and will come in with full confidence on Sunday, 23rd August, 2020 which sees another double header - Knight Riders meeting Tridents, followed by the Warriors-Zouks clash. The action begins from 10 am local (1400 GMT). ADIOS! TAKE CARE!
Victorious Guyana Amazon Warriors captain, Chris Green, says that they were very positive during the break, even though they were 10-15 runs light with the bat. But they believed a special bowling performance could deliver the win and they got it. Praises the debutant Ashmead Nedd for holding his head in a pressure game. Is not too worried about his batsmen not getting the runs with detailing that Brandon King is overdue, Ross Taylor is overdue, Nicholas Pooran is overdue and Sherfane Rutherford is overdue. Adds that with 4 batters overdue, you need not panic. Further says that they do not want to peak now, but rather do that in the final stages of the tournament. On the positives, he observes the bowling under pressure but wants his batsmen to build partnerships and learn from every game.
Jamaica Tallawahs skipper, Rovman Powell, says that he is very disappointed as 120 is a very easy score to chase. On the surface, Powell says that to be honest, there was something in it but both teams batted poorly. On the positives, he looks at Andre Russell's return to form and the bowlers doing well. Is happy with his spinners and hopes that they continue to do well.
NAVEEN-UL-HAQ HAS BEEN NAMED THE MAN OF THE MATCH. He thanks the almighty for helping him do well. Admits that it was a tough wicket to bat on, with the surface sticking and turning, so if he could hang around to take the team to around 120, they could win. Believes that he is lucky to have got a chance to bowl the crucial 19th over to Andre Russell. On his thoughts about becoming an all-rounder, Naveen says that he is trying really hard to improve his batting.
Here comes the presentation...
Everyone bowled well for the Warriors but how cool is the duo of Naveen-ul-Haq and Keemo Paul? They were fantastic at the death, especially when Andre Russell was going berserk. Russell faced 11 balls in the last 2 overs and could score only 16 runs. At 22 needed from 10 balls, one felt it was game on but the Warriors just upped their ante at that moment.
After the fall of Rovman Powell, Russell decided to go for broke. He was on 0 from 6 then. And the Tallawahs needed 69 from 35 balls. He ended up scoring 52 of those and his side lost by 14 runs!
Green unleashed the spinners from ball 1 onto the Tallawahs. Every bowler he used, struck gold. Just one seamer had bowled in the first 10 overs. The Tallawahs were stifled. They were 3 down for 4, tried to get a partnership, only to get more stuck in a mire. They kept losing wickets, entering a hopeless situation, till that man, Andre Russell came along.
Got to have exceeding amount of self-confidence and belief if you felt that you could defend 118. But on a track which assisted spin, Chris Green played his cards really well. The Caribbean Premier League recognized his captaincy skills a couple of years back and here, every ounce of it was on display.
Unbelievable. Guyana Amazon Warriors have defended the lowest total ever in the CPL. Who would have thought? Definitely no one, even in the neutral camp, if he knew that the batting line-up consisted of Walton, Phillips, Powell, Asif, Brathwaite and Russell!

His counterpart Chris Green gets across to his left from long on and takes the catch. He then leaps and throws the ball in the air in jubilation. Disappointing shot from Powell. That fascination of going to the shorter side of the boundary has consumed many a batsmen. This one was dragged from wide outside off. 69 more needed from 35 balls.

Chandrapaul Hemraj to Carlos Brathwaite ,Full and outside off, Brathwaite looks to defend but gets a thick inside edge onto his pads.
Who has come in? Carlos Brathwaite it is.
DRINKS BREAK. Well, we have got a game on now. The Warriors have bossed this first half of this run chase and have created some sort of a pressure on the Tallawahs. From a match point of view, a required rate of 8 will not make much of a difference, but just that they lost 4 wickets inside 10 overs might just put some doubts in their mind. Just one over bowled by a pacer so far. How will Russell and Powell play now? Counter-attack? Normal cricket? Defensive cricket?

Ashmead Nedd to Glenn Phillips ,OUT! CAUGHT! That is a screamer from Keemo Paul. Ashmead Nedd, on CPL debut, strikes on his very first ball. Short and outside off, Phillips looks to cut and does so. It appears like it is in the gap but Paul at cover point races to his left, leaps, stretches out his right hand and grabs it! Sometimes, the best way to deal with attack is to counter-attack. Phillips tried that but just got a top edge which ballooned!
Ashmead Nedd is given the ball now.

Well, Lamichhane is confident of his team chasing this down and so are we. If the Tallawahs cannot chase down 119, they should be introspecting into their batting more than the Warriors. Stay tuned for the run chase.
Jamaica Tallawahs' SANDEEP LAMICHHANE is down for an interview. The leggie praises Mujeeb Ur Rahman for turning things around with his bowling. On the pitch, Lamichhane says that the track was turning and he was just looking to keep the ball up to the batsmen. Is revelling under the shadows of Mujeeb, he humbly says. On his own variations, Sandeep says that he just observed the footwork of the batsmen and accordingly set his plans. Is very confident of his batsmen chasing this down.
What a way to come back by the Tallawahs. They looked lost for the first 5 overs but then bounced back through Mujeeb. He set the tone, and the likes of Lamichhane and Brathwaite took over. The trio shared 8 wickets between themselves in 11.1 overs for 40 runs combined. If any, just feel for Oshane Thomas. Given that the Warriors collapsed, Powell could have given another over to the speedster to just show some confidence.
It looked like a game of two phases. The first 5 overs belonged to the Warriors, as they raced along to 55/0. But then, on came Mujeeb and the game changed. 56/0 became 57/3 and the wickets just kept on tumbling. Just 4 batsmen reached double figures with Mr. Extras being the 4th highest scorer!
How do you collapse to 118 all out from 56/0? Even the Warriors cannot explain. A feeble batting performance has left them reeling at the end of the first innings.

Nedd shows an interest for the second and Naveen too, initially, takes a start. But then, he changes his mind. Nedd though, just keeps on running. He does not even think of going back, in spite of Naveen not interested. The throw comes into Phillips, who does not even collect it cleanly. But Nedd is so far down the track that even though he runs back, he is nowhere in the frame as Phillips takes the bails off.
Third man goes back now.

Carlos Brathwaite to Ross Taylor ,OUT! Catching practice. You can sense the frustration from Ross Taylor. He was focussing a bit too much on the leg side, on the shorter boundary. As he walks across his stumps, Brathwaite darts this on the pads, which is actually the middle stump line. So Taylor, who is actually eyeing the leg side boundary, finds the boundary but is not in control of that shot. DRINKS BREAK. What a fightback from the Tallawahs. 55/0 in the first 5 overs, 20/4 in the next 5! If Oshane Thomas let the momentum slip in the second over, Mujeeb has got that back from the 6th over. The Warriors are in a rut and as we saw in the previous match, a new batsman will find it difficult to play his shots, especially outside the Powerplay. Taylor and Rutherford need to bat sensibly from here on. Probably 40 for the next 5 overs and then go berserk in the last 5. That could take them between 165-175.

Andre Russell to Chandrapaul Hemraj ,OUT! CAUGHT! It is that man Mujeeb again! Only this time, he is the fielder. The Warriors are completely on top now. A nothing delivery, a nothing shot. Yet, a wicket. Short and outside off, Hemraj looks to just run it down to third man but ends up slicing it straight to Mujeeb Ur Rahman at point! The captaincy of Powell can be praised here. Mujeeb is not exactly at point. He is 6-8 feet deep and a bit towards the direction of third man. So a normal point position would have just had his hands on his head. The tables have turned on the Warriors. After a good opening stand of 56, they are 57/3 and have lost both their openers!

Mujeeb Ur Rahman to Ross Taylor ,WIDE. Misses out. Landed outside off, spinning down the leg side, Taylor misses his flick. So actually, both miss out. Mujeeb on the hat-trick, Rosco on a boundary.
Ross Taylor walks in at number 4, replacing Hetmyer, to face the hat-trick ball. A bat-pad comes in. One can sense the pressure being reversed onto the Warriors.

Mujeeb Ur Rahman to Shimron Hetmyer ,OUT! CHOPPED ON! Double strike for the Tallawahs. Very good bowling by Mujeeb. This was bowled at over 100 kph. It was an off spinner, which Hetmyer looked to cut looking at the length. But the pace off the surface did him in. The ball landed, skidded on with the angle, went through before the bat could come down completely, took the inside edge and hit the leg stump. A rare failure for Hetmyer. The Tallawahs are flying!
Shimron Hetmyer walks in at number 3, replacing King.

Mujeeb Ur Rahman to Brandon King ,OUT! BOWLED! Important wicket for the Tallawahs. A quicker, shorter ball, outside off, King gets down on a knee and tries to mow a sweep but is beaten by the pace on that one. The ball spins in and hits the leg stump. End of an entertaining 56-run opening stand.

Andre Russell to Brandon King ,FOUR! This is some really good gap-finding by this opening pair. Short and outside off, King backs away and then thumps it between point and cover-point. That is hardly a gap, isn't it? But he finds it. Some early pressure being put on the bowler.

Andre Russell into the attack. He limped off in the previous game and the Tallawahs will hope it was nothing serious.

Oshane Thomas to Brandon King ,SIX! Poor ball, effortlessly dispatched. Excellent timing. Full and down the leg side, King just flicks it nonchalantly over mid-wicket. The ball clears the ropes!
Some clouds coming over. That should assist some swing and seam movement. Will they go to Oshane Thomas? Or stick to the tested success of Mujeeb Ur Rahman? It is Thomas. Excellent captaincy from Powell, with inputs from Andre Russell and Carlos Brathwaite.

Right. The repair work has been done and we have lost just around 10 minutes. Out come the umpires as the Tallawahs warm up. Out comes the Guyanese opening pair of Brandon King and Chandrapaul Hemraj, which has not fired yet this season. Today is a good opportunity, especially, after being given the chance to bat first. Fidel Edwards will start off proceedings to Brandon King. Here we go...
Guyana Amazon Warriors head coach Johan Botha, is excited to be here in the Caribbean. On the advice to young Ashmead Nedd, Botha says that he just asked the kid to enjoy himself. Was impressed with his skills in the nets last season and is excited to see him play today. On the team this season, Johan says that they have had a steady start, having ups and downs. For today, he wants his batsmen to pile up a big total on a good-looking pitch.
This is unusual. We have a slight delay as the roller, while rolling the pitch over, rolled a ball into the surface, creating a big hole.
Jamaica Tallawahs (Playing XI) - Chadwick Walton, Glenn Phillips(WK), Asif Ali, Rovman Powell(C), Nkrumah Bonner (IN FOR NICHOLAS KIRTON), Carlos Brathwaite, Andre Russell, Fidel Edwards, Sandeep Lamichhane, Oshane Thomas (IN FOR RAMAAL LEWIS) and Mujeeb Ur Rahman.
Guyana Amazon Warriors (Playing XI) - Brandon King, Chandrapaul Hemraj, Shimron Hetmyer, Ross Taylor, Nicholas Pooran (WK), Sherfane Rutherford, Keemo Paul, Chris Green (C), Ashmead Nedd (IN FOR ROMARIO SHEPHERD), Naveen-ul-Haq and Imran Tahir.
PITCH REPORT - Daren Ganga believes that it is a very good pitch for batting. Observes a nice amount of grass, which is not green, that means equal purchase for seamers, spinners and the batsmen too, can play their shots.
Warriors captain, Chris Green, says that today is one such day where the toss does not matter. If it rains, it is okay but he has plenty of confidence in his batting unit. On the team changes, Green says that the Emerging Player rule means that they have leave out the talented Romario Shepherd but is super excited to see the young Ashmead Nedd, after watching him in the nets last season.
Tallawahs skipper, Rovman Powell, says that he expects a little bit of inclement weather, hence the reason to bowl first. Adds that there is something in it for the faster bowlers and informs that Oshane Thomas has been picked for the same reason. Does not remember for who has he come in but adds that Nkrumah Bonner is the other inclusion.
TOSS - Time for the flip of the coin. Chris Green does the flip, HEADS is the call from Rovman Powell and it is a HEAD. JAMAICA TALLAWAHS WILL CHASE.
WEATHER - Bright sunshine envelops the southern area of Trinidad. Let's hope it stays this way.
We are back! Phew. That was just enough time to quickly grab a cup of coffee. The highly-awaited clash of the day is upon us. Guyana Amazon Warriors taking on Jamaica Tallawahs in match number 8.
