Three games into the 2025 Hundred, London Spirit have been hamstrung by the form of their captain Kane Williamson, who has struggled immeasurably so far.
On August 11 (Monday), London Spirit slipped to their second defeat in three games and it was a loss which was a direct consequence of a match-losing knock from their skipper Williamson who, opening the batting, scored 19 off 20 balls before getting out to Josh Tongue.
164 was what London were chasing and they eventually fell short by 10 runs, despite the efforts of David Warner (71 off 51) and Jamie Overton (19 off 7).
Williamson, in his scratchy knock, managed just 2 boundaries off the 20 balls he faced. London were 75 off 56 balls when he got out, with Warner batting on 52*. As it turned out, the lower-order had too much to do following the skipper’s rhythmless outing with the bat in hand.
After 3 innings in The Hundred 2025, Williamson is now averaging 14 and striking at 102.4. No batter who has faced 40+ balls has maintained a lower strike-rate. This 19 off 20 balls comes on the back of a run-a-ball 14 against Welsh Fire, which London narrowly won by 8 runs.
Williamson skipped the two-Test series against Zimbabwe to feature in The Hundred (and the County Championship), but if this season is any evidence to go by, his days as an elite T20 batter seem to be numbered.
