14 Tests and a Decade Later, Australian Batter Finally Confirmed for ODI Debut

Matt Renshaw has been confirmed to make his ODI debut for Australia

Almost ten years and 14 Test appearances later, 29-year-old Matt Renshaw is finally confirmed to make his One-Day International debut on October 19 (Sunday) against India. Renshaw has been in stellar white-ball form over the past few months, including amassing 248 runs in the three-match series against Sri Lanka A.

During that series, the left-hander averaged a staggering 82.66 and was at his fluent best with a strike rate of 127.17. Overall, too, Renshaw has had good numbers in the 50-over format, with 2794 runs at an average of 41.08.

Not just Renshaw, Australia will also hand out an ODI cap to Mitchell Owen, who smashed a 48-ball century against South Australia earlier in the year. Australia will also be without their first-choice wicketkeepers, as both Josh Inglis and Alex Carey are out of the first ODI, with Josh Philippe making a return to the ODI setup.

After missing a lot of international cricket earlier in the year, Matt Short finally makes his comeback to the setup and will be playing at No.3 against India throughout the three-match ODI series.

Talking about Short, Marsh said, "We know that he opens batting for Victoria and Adelaide Strikers and has opened in T20 cricket around the world.”

"But we see no real difference between opening and batting number three, and we feel comfortable with him batting up there.

"Across the board, in our white-ball teams over the last 12 months, we've seen a lot of guys get opportunities and for us, it's all about (them) coming in and being really clear on their role."

Australia’s Possible XI for Sydney ODI:

Mitch Marsh (c), Travis Head, Matt Short, Matthew Renshaw, Josh Philippe (wk), Mitch Owen, Cooper Connolly, Mitchell Starc, Nathan Ellis, Josh Hazlewood, Matthew Kuhnemann
