15 Years After Debut, Williamson Posts His First Ever Golden Duck in ODI Cricket

This was also his first duck in ODIs in 9 years

Kane Williamson does not score a lot of ducks, certainly not in ODI cricket. Prior to the first ODI against England today, the former New Zealand skipper had just posted five ducks in 165 innings. He had, in fact, registered just two ducks post-2010, with the last of those coming all the way back in 2016.

Which is why Mount Maunganui was witness to one of the rarest occurrences today as Williamson registered a golden duck for the first time in his ODI career. Walking in at No.3, Williamson nicked a tempting full delivery from Brydon Carse to head straight back to the pavilion.

His dismissal left New Zealand in a spot of bother at 12/2 chasing 224. Earlier, Harry Brook played one of the most extraordinary ODI knocks in history to single-handedly rescue England from 33/5 to 223. At the time of writing this report, New Zealand were 66/4, having lost their top three, and also Tom Latham, who walked in at No.5.

This was Williamson’s first international match for New Zealand since the Champions Trophy 2025 final against India. There, he managed only 11 off 14 balls, falling to Kuldeep Yadav.

35 now, Williamson is on a part-time contract for the Blackcaps, picking and choosing the games he plays. Earlier this year, he skipped multiple international matches, including Tests, to feature in the County Championship and The Hundred.
