It’s been a while since Suryakumar Yadav’s fearless Indian team last took the field in a T20I. The wait stretches all the way back to February, when they thrashed England 4-1 in a five-match series. The countdown will soon be over as the Asia Cup will kick off on September 9 in the UAE.
India’s squad is yet to be revealed, but one thing is certain: SKY will be back as captain, eager to make his mark in this multi-team tournament. Placed in Group A alongside Pakistan, UAE, and Oman, India will open their campaign against the hosts on September 10.
Fresh off surgery on his lower right abdomen, Suryakumar remains one of India’s most destructive T20 batters. His recent form has been nothing short of extraordinary. In IPL 2025, the Mumbai Indians (MI) superstar piled up 717 runs in 16 innings at an average of 65.18 and a strike rate of 167.9
He didn't get out for a score below 26 and was also named Most Valuable Player of the Season. With the 2026 T20 World Cup looming, he’ll be keen to carry that blistering touch into international cricket.
Here are three major records SKY could smash during the Asia Cup 2025:
Currently sitting on 2,598 runs in 79 innings at an average of 38.20 and a strike rate of 167.07, SKY needs 402 more to reach the 3000-run milestone. He could have up to seven innings in this tournament to get there. What's more, no batter in history has got to 3,000 T20I runs with a strike rate above 150.
Rohit Sharma and Glenn Maxwell lead the charts with five T20I hundreds each, while Suryakumar is right behind with four. Batting in the top order will give him a golden opportunity to at least equal, if not surpass, their record. Given his IPL 2025 form, breaking it outright isn’t out of the question.
With 146 sixes to his name, SKY needs just four more to join the elite club. Only Rohit (205), Martin Guptill (173), Muhammad Waseem (168), and Jos Buttler (160) have cleared the rope more often. This one could be ticked off within a match or two.
