After Imad Wasim, Mohammad Amir announces his retirement from international cricket

After serving his ban for his involvement in the match-fixing scandal in 2009, he returned to the Pakistan squad in 2016 after his ban was reversed in 2015

After Pakistan’s spin-bowling all-rounder Imad Wasim retired for the second time from international cricket, pacer Mohammad Amir too has called it a day from international cricket. Both players last featured for Pakistan in this year’s ICC T20 World Cup held in the USA and West Indies.

Amir had a controversial career in international cricket. After serving his ban for his involvement in the match-fixing scandal in 2009, he returned to the Pakistan squad in 2016 after his ban was reversed in 2015. He played 36 Tests, 61 ODIs, and 62 T20Is for Pakistan while taking 271 international wickets and scoring 1,179 runs across the three formats.

“It has been a great honour to play for Pakistan across all three formats. I know this is a difficult decision, but I feel this is the right time for the next generation to take the baton and elevate Pakistan cricket to new heights,” Amir said in a statement released by PCB.

“I would like to thank the PCB for always extending the much-needed support over the years, and I look forward to watching the team excel. I would also like to thank Pakistan fans for always supporting me throughout my career.”

Amir was part of the 2009 ICC T20 World Cup winning squad and played a massive role in the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy. More importantly, his spell against India in the final changed the dynamics altogether, as India never recovered from the jolt.

However, both Amir and Imad continued to clash with authority figures in Pakistan cricket, and the continuous change in dispensation at PCB ensured they never really arrived at a decision to play for Pakistan, announcing it one day and then changing it the next. The T20 World Cup in 2024 was a massive moment for both of them, but Pakistan had a run they would want to forget.
