As if the two losses against South Africa and Australia in back-to-back matches were not enough, the sorrows of the India women’s team in the Women’s World Cup 2025 at home were compounded as the International Cricket Council (ICC) slapped a fine on the team.
On October 15 (Wednesday), the Indian women’s team were handed a fine of five percent of their match fee for maintaining a slow overrate during their match against Australia at Visakhapatnam on October 12 (Sunday).
India, who set a target of 330, a daunting one at the start, took more time in completing their overs even as Australia chased that down with an over to spare. This led to Michell Pereira, the match referee for the game, to impose the fine on India.
The fine was imposed in accordance with Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel – which deals with minimum overrate offences. Players are fined five percent of their match fee for every over that their side fails to bowl within the stipulated time.
There was no requirement for a formal hearing as the Indian skipper, Harmanpreet Kaur, accepted the sanctions and agreed to bear the proposed fine. For the game, Sue Redfern and Nimali Perera were the on-field umpires while Kim Cotton was on TV umpire duties and Jacquline Williams was the fourth umpire.
India will now play against England women on October 19 in Indore. So far, India have won two and lost two matches in the tournament.
