Another Backer Of Two-Tier WTC System: England All-Rounder Picks His Top Tier Teams

Three teams, part of the Test world, have never played in WTC, and the structure, as it is, lacks competitiveness

Despite having the name World Test Championship (WTC), not all teams in the world playing Test cricket get a shot at it. Into the fourth edition of the tournament and three teams, namely Zimbabwe, Afghanistan and Ireland, have never been part of it.

It is then that the idea of a two-tier WTC comes to mind, to try and develop this format of the game internationally and let its charm reverberate across the cricketing globe. Another backer of the two-tier WTC was found in former England all-rounder Moeen Ali

Ali even went on to name the teams he would like to see in the top tier if it comes to a two-tier system in WTC.

“There could potentially be two tiers or two kinds of leagues where you have a top-two playing the final. And then there’s a bit of a relegation and promotion kind of thing, maybe,” Moeen said in an interview to Sportstar.

“So it depends on who’s playing, etc. I think that’s probably the best way to do it. My top teams would be England, India, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. And the rest will have a tier-two system. The other teams can then advance to the league if they do well,” he explained the format.

Currently, South Africa are the WTC titleholders, defeating Australia in the final held at Lord’s in June this year.
