Arshdeep Singh impressed one and all in the dead rubber against Sri Lanka when he snatched a victory from the jaws of defeat for India. This was despite him going for quite a few runs in the first two overs in the powerplay, as he later came back at the death and the Super Over, where he conceded just two runs and practically won the game for India there.
However, he has played only two games so far in this Asia Cup, including the Sri Lanka game. Speaking on his performance, former Indian cricketer R Ashwin said that Arshdeep is India’s top T20I bowler and merits a place in every T20I game.
“Before the Asia Cup itself, I was saying how Arshdeep Singh is absolutely mandatory in this Indian team. His point just got proven once again. What a terrific finish to the game. The way he bowled in the Super Over reiterated why he is mandatory,” Ashwin remarked on his YouTube show ‘Ash Ki Baat’.
“Yes, in this game, Jasprit Bumrah wasn’t there, which is a huge loss for any team, but he will return in the final, which will bolster India. But Arshdeep Singh has given a great account of himself once again to show why he is one of India’s premier bowlers,” Ashwin added.
Ashwin even went ahead and claimed that he is India’s main bowler in the format and mentioned how he got to 100 T20I wickets before any other Indian bowler.
“When there is a Jasprit Bumrah in the team, no one really talks about Arshdeep Singh. But I will stick my neck out and say he is India’s premier bowler in this format. All the bowlers are very good, but he has staked his claim. He’s got 100 T20I wickets and once again proved why he is very good,” Ashwin said.
While the Indian team is tight-lipped about the team combination for the final, it would be interesting if Arshdeep is dropped and India play Shivam Dube as their third pacer.
