The Delhi Capitals skipper Axar Patel suffered a fine after he failed to make his team finish the 20 overs against Mumbai Indians in the stipulated amount of time given. Axar will now have to cough up INR 12 Lakh as a penalty for the slow over rate.
Notably, the Indian Premier League (IPL) has eliminated suspensions as a penalty for over-rate offences. Now, only fines are levied on defaulters, apart from the on-field restrictions during the last few overs of the game. As it was Axar’s first offence, he was fined INR 12 Lakh according to Article 2.22 of the IPL code of conduct.
The fine came after the Capitals' heart-breaking loss against the Suryakumar Yadav-led Mumbai side. They had conceded 206 but were in a good position to chase the target down after Karun Nair’s superb comeback knock of 89 runs in almost no time.
They needed 66 of 48 deliveries and had seven wickets in hand at one stage in the chase, but they shot themselves in the foot with three run-outs in the penultimate over. This was DC’s first loss in five games in the tournament, where they have maintained their position amongst the top sides right from the beginning.
Meanwhile, Axar isn’t the first IPL skipper to have suffered a fine this season. MI skipper Hardik Pandya, RR skipper Sanju Samson, and RCB skipper Rajat Patidar have also been fined for slow over rate this season.
