South Africa captain Temba Bavuma has been ruled out of the first Test against Bangladesh after scans revealed a left tricep muscle strain, Cricket South Africa (CSA) announced on October 11 (Friday). Aiden Markram will lead the side in Bavuma's absence. Bavuma will, however, travel with the squad to Dhaka on October 15 (Tuesday) and continue his rehabilitation under the watchful eyes of the medical team.
He sustained the injury during the second One-Day International (ODI) against Ireland in the UAE, following which he left the field retired hurt. He did not play in the third ODI, as a result, with Markram leading the side.
Uncapped batter Dewald Brevis has been added as cover. The 21-year-old, who has played a couple of T20 Internationals (T20I) for the Proteas, earned his maiden Test call-up after smashing 49 and 74 against Sri Lanka A in the second four-day game last month. Moreover, Lungi Ngidi comes into the squad as a replacement for Nandre Burger, who was ruled out of the series due to a lumbar stress fracture.
The two-match Test series will begin on October 21 at the Shere Bangla Stadium in Mirpur. The action will then shift to Chattogram for the second Test on October 29.
