Shubman Gill has been a phenomenon on India’s tour of England this year. After hitting a century in his first Test as captain of the Indian Test team, Gill, in the second Test, smashed a double century and not just a double century, but he registered the highest score by an Indian captain ever. He broke several other records, a list of which we have compiled below.

But more than the records, it was the flawlessness of his batting that impressed one and all, earning praise and comparison to former India captain Virat Kohli.
Gill, himself, revealed how he had suddenly found a new approach to his batting after revisiting the style of play he used when he first fell in love with the game as a child.
“I mainly worked on my initial movement and my setup. Before that, I felt my batting was going well. I scored 30-35-40 runs consistently in Test matches. But at some point, I was missing that peak concentration time. A lot of people say that when you focus too much, you sometimes miss your peak time,” Gill said in a video released by the BCCI on July 4 (Friday).
Saying that he went back to basics, the 25-year-old delved into the details of the changes he made in his style of play.
“So, in this series, I tried to go back to my basics. I tried to bat like I used to in my childhood. I didn’t think about having reached 35–40 runs or about playing long innings. I just wanted to enjoy my batting.”
“Sometimes, when you aren’t scoring runs fluently, you stop enjoying your batting. You focus too much on the need to score runs. I felt I had lost that in my batting. I was so focused that I wasn’t enjoying my batting as much,” he said.
Thanks to Gill’s 269, India posted a mammoth 587 in their first innings of the second Test in Edgbaston and led by 510 runs at the end of the day after England were once reduced to 25/3 but ended the proceedings at 77/3 with Joe Root and Harry Brook adding an unbeaten 52 for the fourth wicket.
