Ben Stokes produced a remarkable all-round performance in the fourth Test between England and India at Old Trafford, becoming the first captain in 42 years to score a century and take a five-wicket haul in the same Test.
Stokes had earlier taken 5/72 in the first innings. On July 26 (Saturday), he brought up his 14th Test century - his first in over two years. His previous ton came against Australia at Lord’s in June 2023, and he had gone 20 Tests without reaching three figures since then.
Stokes now joins an elite group of captains to achieve this double. Before him, only West Indies greats Denis Atkinson and Garry Sobers, and Pakistan legends Mushtaq Mohammad and Imran Khan had managed the feat.
The 34-year-old has been in excellent form with the ball throughout the series, but had been struggling for a big score. At Old Trafford, he finally found rhythm with the bat in ideal conditions.
He brought up his century with a boundary off Mohammed Siraj. This was also his third Test hundred at Old Trafford - a ground where he clearly enjoys batting. During his knock, he also went past 7000 Test runs.
Stokes eventually got out to Jadeja after scoring 141 off 198 deliveries.
