Many questioned Washington Sundar being backed by the Indian management in this Test series; however, he turned out to be the hero for his team in the third innings at Lord’s as he picked up four wickets for just 22 runs in 12.1 overs.
What was even more impressive in that decisive performance from Sundar was clean bowled all his victims. Not only that, three of those wickets were Joe Root, Ben Stokes, and Jamie Smith, who are the spine of England’s middle-order batting.
He cleaned up Root’s after the batter attempted to sweep with the ball drifting in and then just straightening a bit. Meanwhile, against Stokes, he got the ball to dip as it drifted in, and the England skipper played all over the delivery, and swiping just clean air in his attempted hoick over mid-wicket.
However, his dismissal of Smith was the most spectacular amongst all three, as the ball just skidded through straight after coming in with the angle, as Smith played for the turn and lost his off-stump. He also bowled Shoaib Bashir to bring an end to England’s misery in the third innings.
With four wickets and all bowled, Sundar became the Indian bowler to have the joint-most bowled dismissals in an innings in England (along with Jasprit Bumrah who got it in the first innings). He also achieved the record of inflicting the most bowled dismissals in a Lord’s Test.
Meanwhile, with as many as 12 bowled dismissals in this Test, India became the first team since 1887 to do so in England. It is also a record for India, as they have never had the stumps shattered this many times in a Test ever.
