Cameron Green is back and looks primed to make his first international appearance since September as the all-rounder has been named in Australia’s squad for the World Test Championship (WTC) Final against South Africa at Lord’s.
Green underwent back surgery towards the end of last year, due to which he missed the Border-Gavaskar Test series against India, the Champions Trophy and IPL 2025. However, he has since made a successful return in the County Championship representing Gloucestershire, hammering a century in his first innings back.
Though he is not fit to bowl, the 25-year-old has been picked as a specialist batter and will likely slot into the side at No.3, with Steve Smith occupying the No.4 slot that Green vacated.
Green moving to No.3 will mean that Marnus Labuschagne will open the batting alongside Usman Khawaja, pushing Sam Konstas to the bench. Konstas is part of the squad, but reports suggest that Labuschagne’s experience in England is likely to give him the edge.
Beau Webster has been picked as well, and is all but a lock in the starting XI, while Josh Inglis is the spare batter in the squad.
In terms of bowlers, all the big guns are present, while Matthew Kuhnemann has been picked as the second spinner. South Australia’s Brendan Doggett has been named as a travelling reserve.
Selection chair George Bailey confirmed that Australia have picked the same squad for the three-Test series against West Indies starting in June.
