Virat Kohli is all set to play his favorite format as he returns to One-Day internationals. He is focusing on getting ready for the 2025 edition of the ICC Champions Trophy, which starts later this month, on February 19.
Playing this three-match ODI series against England is the best way to get ready for the mega event, as both sides will be fielding their Champions Trophy squads, making it a warm-up for the tournament.
Coming into the series, there are a few records that Virat Kohli can break if he manages to score big in the three-match ODI series.
Kohli currently has 13906 runs in ODIs, placing him at number three, below Sachin Tendulkar and Kumar Sangakkara. He is 94 runs short of completing 14000 ODI runs, which he can easily achieve.
If he has a remarkable ODI series where he scores three big scores across, he can surpass Sangakkara who is currently at number two with 14234 runs. Virat Kohli will need to score 329 runs in three ODIs in order to go ahead of the Sri Lankan great.
Kohli’s record at home in ODIs has been spectacular, as he has a positive record in almost every venue. With 6268 runs, he is second on the list of most runs at home in ODIs - below his mentor Sachin Tendulkar, who has 6976 runs.
The gap in runs might be over 700, but the gap between 50+ scores is just one. Tendulkar has 58 fifty-plus scores at home, which is a combination of 38 fifties and 20 centuries. Virat Kohli has 57 fifty-plus scores at home with 33 fifties and 24 centuries.
If Virat manages to cross the fifty run mark in two of the three ODIs, he will surpass Sachin and will have the most 50+ scores on home soil in ODIs
Virat Kohli, like many other opponents, has maintained a good record against England as well. He has scored 1340 runs in 36 innings at a decent average of 41.87, with nine fifties and three centuries. He is 293 runs short of going to top of the list of highest run scorers against England as Chris Gayle tops the chart with 1632 runs.
With Kohli having good records across the three venues of this ODI series (Nagpur, Cuttack and Ahmedabad), we can expect him to have a terrific series against England starting on Wednesday, 6th February.
