Former India batting coach Sanjay Bangar has made bold predictions about the careers of modern-day greats of Indian cricket – Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. Banglar feels that because of better fitness standards, the careers of cricket players will get longer and in that regard, Kohli has at least five more years of Test cricket left in him.
“With Virat, [it] depends on his body. The last format that he would give up would be Test cricket. So, I am sure you will see Virat playing Test cricket for another five years,” Bangar said in a The Rao podcast on Friday (August 23).
Bangar, who has spent a great amount of time with Kohli both as an Indian support staff member and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) coach, said that Kohli’s body is well-trained to play even in his 40s.
The former Railways captain also spoke about India’s current Test and ODI skipper, Rohit. As per Bangar’s analysis, since many professionals are working on a player now, even Rohit can play as long as his fitness allows.
“I think Rohit will continue to play as long as his body and fitness allows him to. Because a player of that quality – Sachin played till 40, even Rahul played till 40 – with better fitness standards, more professionals are looking after players. Like a lot of nutritionists also are helping,” said the head of cricket development at Punjab Kings.
India will play 10 Tests in the next six months, hosting Bangladesh and New Zealand before embarking on a tour of Australia for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25.
