DC vice-captaincy reward for all that you've done for the team: Axar Patel

The all-rounder will hope to play a significant role in IPL 2023 as DC search for their maiden title

Delhi Capitals (DC) were forced to name David Warner as their new captain as Rishabh Pant continues to recover from a horrific car crash in December. All-rounder Axar Patel as a result has been elevated as the vice-captain of the side. He has featured heavily for India across formats over the last year or so that has seen him being promoted to Category A in BCCI's contract list.

Speaking of his elevation as vice-captain of DC, Axar said, “In my opinion, if you have gotten this role that means you are growing as a senior player. It’s like getting a reward for all that you’ve done for the team. I’m excited about this role."

“Our team is mostly the same, we have the same players from the last 3-4 years. We know our players well and that will be an important point.”

Axar picked up six wickets at an economy rate of 7.47 in the IPL last season. He did well in the limited chances he received with the bat, scoring 182 runs at a strike-rate of 151.67.

The all-rounder is also looking forward to providing full support to Warner as DC eye their first Indian Premier League (IPL) title.

“David is a talented player. I will provide him with an atmosphere where he can make best use of his abilities. It’s a different feeling altogether when you join DC Camp. It’s been 3-4 years with the franchise now and it feels like home,” Axar said.

DC begin their IPL 2023 campaign against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in Lucknow on Saturday (April 1). They will play their first game at home against defending champions Gujarat Titans (GT) on Tuesday (April 4).
