De Kock, Ngidi and Miller to miss Sri Lanka ODIs

The trio will, however, return for the three-match T20I series

South Africa have named an extended squad for the white-ball tour of Sri Lanka, scheduled for the first two weeks of September. The Proteas will be without the services of three key senior players - Quinton de Kock, Lungi Ngidi and David Miller - for the three-match ODI series that will commence on September 2.

While de Kock has been rested for the ODI series that will precede the T20Is, Ngidi will miss the 50-over games due to personal reasons. Miller, meanwhile, has not been risked in the ODI games due to the southpaw carrying a niggle.

While the three aforementioned players will miss the ODIs, they will be available for selection for the T20Is, which are set to serve as preparation for the T20 World Cup. South Africa are coming on the back of a 3-0 series win over Ireland, and the Proteas, next month, will be looking to make it three T20I series victories on the bounce, having also downed the West Indies 3-2 in July.

A notable inclusion in both the ODI and T20I squads is all-rounder Dwaine Pretorius, who missed both the successful tours of West Indies and Ireland with injury. The 32-year-old, whose last T20I appearance came against Pakistan in February in Lahore,  has earned a recall, while there is also a place in both the ODI and T20I squads for the impressive Wiaan Mulder.

There is, however, still no place in the squad for Faf du Plessis, whose last T20I appearance came against England last year. Du Plessis has currently been sidelined from The Hundred due to concussion, and the 37-year-old continues to be left out of the Proteas squad, despite the World T20 being only two months away. Both the ODI and T20I squads will be led by Temba Bavuma, who will have the trio of Kagiso Rabada, Anrich Nortje and Tabraiz Shamsi at his disposal for all six games of the tour.

ODI squad

Temba Bavuma (captain), Junior Dala, Beuran Hendricks, Reeza Hendricks, Heinrich Klaasen, George Linde, Janneman Malan, Keshav Maharaj, Aiden Markram, Wiaan Mulder, Anrich Nortje, Andile Phehlukwayo, Dwaine Pretorius, Kagiso Rabada, Tabraiz Shamsi, Rassie van der Dussen, Kyle Verreynne, Lizaad Williams.

T20I squad
