Gone are the days when Indian women struggled to chase anything beyond the 250-run mark, as they mauled down 259 runs with relative ease in the first ODI against England women, on July 16 (Tuesday).
India started the run chase strong, on the back of Smriti Mandhana’s fizzy 24-ball 28. While Pratika Rawal kept that run chase going with a 51-ball 36, pressure started to creep in around the 30th over of the run chase, when they found themselves four down.
Harleen Deol (27) and Harmanpreet Kaur (17) walked back without troubling the scorers much, putting Jemimah Rodrigues and Deepti Sharma under pressure. However, the duo steamrolled the English bowling unit, taking the much-needed calculated risks, starting multiple overs with a boundary.
While Rodrigues got out for 48, the 86-ball 90 partnership was enough to put India in the driver's seat, as they chased down their highest total against England and their second-highest in WODIs. Deepti stayed unbeaten till the end, with an impressive 64-ball 62.
