Defeats against India could be a good thing: Moeen Ali

England have lost the T20I series 2-1 and are trailing the three-match ODI series after a 10-wicket loss in the first ODI

England had a rocky start under new head coach Matthew Mott and white-ball captain Jos Buttler as they lost the T20I series to India 2-1 and suffered a humbling 10-wicket loss in the first ODI at The Oval.

Moeen Ali sees the losses as a learning experience for his team. Ahead of the second ODI at Lord's, the spin-bowling allrounder felt that the defeats will only help them in building for the future.

"We've lost a few games, which is good for us, I think, moving forward. Then hopefully closer to the World Cup, we start winning. It doesn't mean we don't want to win now. But you don't want to win all the games in my opinion. It's a good thing that sometimes you learn more from losing," Moeen said on Thursday.

Moeen felt that the team is not yet full strength and felt that peaking too early can be counterproductive.

"We've been dominating for the last few years. We've had a lot of success. We won a World Cup. You don't want to peak too early. We know there are players that need to come back in who can strengthen us," he said.

In the first ODI, four top-order batters were dismissed for ducks as they crumbled to 110 all out after Jasprit Bumrah claimed 6-19. England didn't have a proper reply as Indian openers Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan chased down the target in 18.4 overs.

"We need to step up as senior players in the team. When it is your turn to do that, you will do it," Moeen said.

The 35-year old said that there is no need for panic after the recent losses.

"There is no need to panic or change. It definitely takes time to bed in and it will take a few defeats, which is fine. We have been dominating for the last few years in a nice way and playing well," he said.

Moeen backed new captain Jos Buttler, saying that there is no communication gap with the bowlers on the field.

"Jos does speak to the bowlers beforehand, but he will tell me sometimes to go up to the bowler. It works nicely. When Morgs (Eoin Morgan) didn't play he was always like that. It is not a problem having a keeper as captain," he said.

"Jos is a brilliant leader. He has done it over the years when Eoin hasn't played but it is going to take a couple of games in all the formats. As a new captain no matter how cool you are, you want to get off to a winning start but he knows there is a long way to go and the team will be fine," he added.
