Things were looking hunky-dory for the Delhi Capitals (DC) when they had won five of their first six matches in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. They got over the line in close encounters, including a one-wicket win over Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and also beat Rajasthan Royals (RR) in a super over.
However, since then, they have won just one of their next seven matches and as a result, they are now out of contention for a place IPL 2025 playoffs. In fact, they are the only team not to make it to the playoffs after winning the first four matches of the season,
DC needed to win at all costs against Mumbai Indians (MI) at the Wankhede Stadium on May 21 (Wednesday), but eventually lost the game by 59 runs, chasing 181. They are currently in fifth place on the points table and will take on Punjab Kings (PBKS) in their final match of the season in Jaipur on May 24 (Saturday).
They were without their skipper Axar Patel for the crucial match against MI as he was down with the flu. Faf du Plessis led the Capitals in his absence. DC's last win came on April 22 when they beat LSG by eight wickets in Lucknow.
Abishek Porel (301) and KL Rahul (504) are the only two batters to score over 300 runs, while Tristan Stubbs (282) is not far behind. They were dealt with a blow in the bowling department as Mitchell Starc, their leading wicket-taker, pulled out of the tournament after the tournament was stopped midway due to the India-Pakistan tensions.
DC were hoping to make it to the playoffs for the first time since 2021, when they finished top of the table. However, they have fallen short once again this time.
