Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar feels Shreyas Iyer didn’t get enough credit for winning the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 as Kolkata Knight Riders' captain. Under Iyer’s leadership, KKR won the title after 10 years, but a lot of credit was given to Gautam Gambhir.
Gambhir was then the mentor of KKR, and is now the head coach of the Indian men’s senior team. Meanwhile, Iyer is leading Punjab Kings (PBKS) in the IPL 2025 and has propelled them to the playoffs for the first time since 2014.
"He did not get the credit for the IPL victory last season. All the plaudits were given to someone else. It is the captain who plays a major role in what is happening in the middle, not someone sitting in the dugout," Gavaskar told Star Sports.
"See, this year he's getting fair credit. No one is giving all the credit to (PBKS coach) Ricky Ponting.”
Punjab defeated Rajasthan Royals (RR) by 10 runs on May 18, and after Gujarat Titans (GT) got the better of Delhi Capitals (DC) later on the same day, PBKS confirmed their place in the playoffs alongside GT and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB).
Punjab have lost only three of their 12 games in the IPL 2025, and Iyer has led them from the front. The right-hander from Mumbai has smashed 435 runs across 12 innings at an average of 48.33 and a strike rate of 174.70.
