Dinesh Karthik questions Virat Kohli's credentials against spin
The former India captain has struggled against spinners, especially in the subcontinent
Virat Kohli's weakness against spin has been exposed in the ongoing Test series against New Zealand but it's been a concerning aspect for quite some time now. Since 2020, Kohli has averaged just 28.3 against spinners in Asian conditions. Moreover, 22 of his 27 dismissals in Asia during this period have come against spin.
Speaking about this staggering decline, former India wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik has asked Kohli to do whatever it takes to figure out where he is going wrong and come out stronger, even if it means going back to domestic cricket.
"Virat Kohli has not had it easy. The series has not been good to him. Three out of four innings, he has disappointed. It's obviously a recurring pattern where spinners have troubled him, and I think he will go and figure out what he needs to do to come out stronger," Karthik said on Cricbuzz.
"He is a man who is searching for answers. When you reach that level of genius and super-stardom, you will be thrown challenges and here is another challenge. India likes to play on pitches that aids spin, what is his game plan?" he added.
Like many, Karthik also believes a stint in the domestic circuit could help Kohli overcome his spin troubles, especially in the subcontinent.
"We all know what he is capable of, this series was not meant to be. Like the fans have been saying, he has not done it for a long time, and that he cannot run away from it. We don't want to sugarcoat it because we want to be as objective in assessing any player, any performance, at the moment Virat Kohli's Test record in the last 2-3 years has not been great against spin," he said.
"What he needs to do, is probably go back to domestic cricket and focus on what needs to be done with the current rules of DRS. There is no doubt the left-arm spinners pose a big threat."
Kohli will look to bounce back to form when India take on New Zealand in the third and final Test of the series in Mumbai, starting November 1 (Friday).
