With his third duck in as many innings, Pakistan’s Abdullah Shafique has created unwanted history, becoming the first opener IN HISTORY to register three ducks in a three-match bilateral ODI series.
Martin Guptill is the only other opener to have scored three ducks in a bilateral ODI series. However, Guptill’s three ducks came in a seven-match series, against Sri Lanka in 2015.
In fact, only one other batter has scored three ducks in a three-match ODI series, and that’s India’s Suryakumar Yadav. Suryakumar registered that unwanted feat against Australia last year, where he scored a hat-trick of golden ducks.
The duck today against South Africa in Johannesburg made it seven ducks in the year - across formats - for Shafique, who began the year with a pair against Australia in the Sydney Test.
Zimbabwe’s Blessing Muzarabani is the only other player to have registered more ducks in international cricket this year (9).
