Mumbai’s Sarfaraz Khan, earlier this week, was named in team India’s squad for the first Test against Bangladesh, but the 26-year-old needed a strong showing in the Duleep Trophy 2024 clash against India C to push for a spot in the XI. It was mainly due to the increased competition in the Indian set-up due to the comeback of KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant.
However, Sarfaraz failed to cross 50 for the third innings running in the competition as he was dismissed by Haryana and Mumbai Indians pacer Anshul Kamboj for 16. It was an uncharacteristically shaky stay in the middle for Sarfaraz, who batted 55 balls for his 16 before getting trapped LBW.
On the back of the 16 in the first innings of the India B vs India C clash, Sarfaraz’s average in Duleep Trophy 2024 reads 23.6. The right-hander had a golden opportunity to post a mammoth score in the second innings of the first round, against India A, but perished for 46. That was an ultra-aggressive knock from Sarfaraz, who batted at a strike rate of 129.78.
No fifty-plus scores in three opportunities might just end up hurting the 26-year-old’s case for the first Test against Bangladesh.
In the same game, Sarfaraz's brother Musheer Khan also departed cheaply for 1 off 15 balls. Rinku Singh could only manage 6 off 16 balls in his first innings in Duleep Trophy 2024.
