EMBARASSING! Shubman Gill’s India Register Multiple UNWANTED RECORDS In Headingley

India have now won only 1 of the last 9 Tests they’ve played

Shubman Gill’s captaincy debut in Tests got off to a promising start, and it looked like he could begin his captaincy stint with a famous win away in England. However, after being in control of the Test for the vast majority of the game, India still managed to not just lose the game, but get THUMPED, as England chased down 371 with five wickets in hand, without breaking a sweat.

As a result, Gill has now started his captaincy stint off with a bad loss, and India have won only 1 of the last 9 Tests they’ve played.

With the loss in Headingley today, Gill & India have also created multiple unwanted records. Let’s look at a few of them.

First team in history to lose after scoring five centuries

For the first time in history, a team has lost after having five centuries in a Test. That’s right, India had five different centuries scored in this Test - Jaiswal, Rahul, Gill, Pant (x2) - and yet they not only lost the contest, but got absolutely obliterated. In contrast, England breezed to a win despite only having two centurions - Ollie Pope and Ben Duckett.

Most runs conceded by a team on day five in 77 years

England scored 352 runs on day five today to seal victory. That’s the most any team has managed to score on day five in 77 years. You’ll have to go back to 1948 for the last instance of a team scoring more on day five, when Australia hammered 404 runs, incidentally also in Leeds.

First Asian team to fail to defend 350+ targets multiple times

Since the start of 2022, there have been two instances of 350+ totals being chased: England vs India at Edgbaston 2022 and England vs India at Headingley 2025. India have now become the first Asian team in Test history to fail to defend 350+ targets on multiple occasions.

England, Australia and the West Indies are the other teams that have failed to defend 350+ totals multiple times in Test cricket.

Highest 4th innings opening partnership conceded by any team this century

Defending 371, India conceded 188 runs for the opening stand in the fourth innings. It's the highest opening partnership conceded in the fourth innings by any team this century.
